THE BOX
My name is SPRING-LEE-PA. Funny name, isnât it? But I like it. It has a âspringâ to it as well, a kind of âbounceâ! I get very excited when I see kids playing with a ball. I love it when the ball bounces. Just like my name! I canât spring or bounce but I can certainly have a spring in my step! They say itâs nice to have that. Do you think so too? We have such names in our community but some others think that itâs an odd name. As if Basant is being addressed as Basantee!! He He HeâŠPoor joke! I live in a very small place just outside the town of GANGTOK. Thatâs also a funny name for a place but it is very musical â GANG â TOK, GANG â TOK, GANG â TOK. I love the sound of this name and I am sure you will like it too although I am told by elders that GANGS donât TALK. They only fight. Ha ha he he heâŠanother poor joke!
I am not writing this to tell you about funny names and make you suffer my bad jokes. There are so many such names and many more bad jokes! Besides, I donât think my name is funny and actually I donât like people who think so. I just want to tell you about a very adventurous day in my life. Let me get to that straight away.
The day was very cloudy with dark clouds threatening rain. The rainy season was about to begin and everybody was trying to store food. It rains very heavily in our locality and during rains it is very difficult to go and collect food from the shop. We have only one small shop in our neighborhood. We were told that new provisions had come to the shop so we all decided to go to the shop and get food. Ours is a hilly region and walking up and down with a big load of things is very difficult so we thought we will all bring small amounts and stock food in the house.
I live in a very large family and our community is known for hard work. We are always working and are much disciplined. All work, no play! We often move in a line, especially when we are small so that we do not get lost. But I always broke the line and stood looking at exciting things around me â monkeys with their little ones, kids playing with balls or flying kites, chicks following their mother hen, bright flowers. The BIG MOM in our family, the eldest one always scolded me: âwhere is your line, Spring-Lee? Your mischief will get you into big trouble one dayâ! Apart from being naughty, I was also very inquisitive, always wanting to know more and more. My Ma and Pa used to get tired answering my questions but they did answer the questions they knew. Â There were questions for which they did not have an answer: âwhy does a sugar crystal taste sweet while a potato chip is salty?â
Once again, I am getting out of line, moving away from my story! I should learn how to focus! So that day, we all went to the local store. The other family living in our neighbourhood also came. So, we were a big group.  In the other family, there was a little one named BING-LEE-PO. I liked him a lot as he was somewhat like me. But he looked smarter. While I was very dark, he had a very nice light brown complexion. I always loved to go out when their family came with us, especially when BING came along! I used to call him BINGO, and he was my best friend. So, we all went to the shop and collected our stuff and were about to go back when a very nice photograph in the shop caught my eye. I was fascinated by it and kept looking at it for some time. A number of small boys and girls were flying kites in that picture. One kite was pink and blue and had a very long tail like that of a langoor â the black faced monkey. Another bright red and yellow kite was made like a dragon. One orange kite had a face of a joker printed on it. Everybody was enjoying kite flying in a large field full of beautiful flowers. The picture was really lovely. I stood there admiring it. I do not know for how long I was standing there gazing at the photograph. I suddenly heard big thunder and sound of rain. I looked around and found that there was nobody from my family near me. I WAS LOST. THE BIG MOM WAS RIGHT! I WAS IN DEEP TROUBLE! And as you would have guessed by now, I WAS SCARED STIFF! I did not know what to do. It had started to rain heavily and so I decided to move in the direction of my home. After walking for some time, I realized that I was going in the wrong direction because it was uphill and I was getting really tired with the weight of food I was carrying.  When we had come to the shop, we had walked up the hill. So, I should be going downhill, not uphill. So, I stopped and stood on the sidewalk under the roof of a house to save myself from the rain.
It started to rain more heavily. It was raining âcats and dogsâ as they say. Soon, rain water started to flow on the road. Some kids on the other side of the road were playing in the rain. They had made paper boats and were floating them in the water on the road. They were jumping with joy, shouting, singing and pushing each other in jest. I also wanted to go and play but did not want to get wet and catch cold. I also had food with me which would have got spoiled. So, I stood there watching the kids. The rain became heavier and the water started to flow on the sidewalk as well. I got more scared and was wondering what to do.  I didnât want to get wet and the thought of being in water sent a chill up my spine as I had not learned to swim. I was so scared now that I wanted to cry. I shouted for help but nobody could hear me as the rain was making a big noise. I thought I heard somebody but I could see no one from my family nearby. It was then that I saw a large box on a step near the side walk. The lid was slightly open. I ran to the box as fast as I could and climbed into it with some difficulty but carefully carrying my provisions with me.
It was absolutely dark inside the box. I could not see anything. The small opening in the box did not allow much light to come into the box.  In any case it was dark because of the heavy rains. But I was feeling somewhat safe. At least the box was dry. Soon, the rains became heavier. And the entire road including the sidewalk was filled with water flowing down the hill. There was thunder and lightning which filled the box for a split second and then there was darkness again. Since I did not have the energy to climb out of the box, I stayed there. Unfortunately for me, the road and the side-walk soon became a river and the box started to move. The water must have reached the level of the step carrying the box with it. Before I could realize what was happening, the box started to float down-hill. Rain water had started to enter the box now and my feet were wet. We were floating down the hill! I had thought I cannot get more scared but believe me, I was!
We floated for some time and I was trying to figure out my next course of action. Suddenly, we stopped going down-hill. We had hit some kind of an obstruction. I thought, I will climb out of the box and see where I was. The rain seems to have stopped. Just as I was about to peep out, somebody lifted the box and opened it. I saw a smiling face. I recognized him immediately. He was one of the kids who were playing on the other side of the road. As I peeped out of the box, I saw that he was wading in knee deep water. As soon as he opened the box, his excitement knew no bounds and he shouted to the girl who was walking on the other side of the road: âLook!! There is an ant in this match box. It has a grain of wheat on its shouldersâ! The girl came running to look and opened the box fully to look at me properly. âHey, there is another one. This one is brown!â As she said that I looked around and found Bingo hiding in the other corner of the match-box! He looked at me dumbfounded and came running to hug me. We were so happy to find each other. The kids were more excited as they looked at us with fascination. We looked at their bright faces and got scared again. We had seen kids playing with ants and killing them. Our relief was short-lived and we waited with bated breath to find out what is in store for us!
The boy and the girl said something to each other in a language I did not understand. But then the girl softly put the match-box on the small staircase of the house which was nearby and walked hand in hand further down the hill, joyfully playing in knee deep water. We were quite scared still. But after sometime, we mustered up courage to get out of the box. I carried the grain of wheat with me. Bingo had lost his crystal of sugar in the rain. But we were happy that we were safe. Now we had to find the way to our homes.
The rain had stopped and a weak sun was shining. I told Bingo: âLet us see if we can find our homes. It will soon be dark.â Bingo looked around and said: âBuddhu, our homes are right here in this house. The rain water has brought us down-hill and the kids had put the box in the right place!â I looked around and realized that he was right â he was always a smart cookie. We said bye to each other and moved towards our homes that were located on the two sides of the house.
As I entered our home in the hole located at the left side of the house, everybody shouted with joy. My Ma and Pa were particularly happy. I told everybody the entire story and they heard it with rapt attention. They were so pleased with my experience and my brave efforts to save myself and the grain of wheat that I was carrying. My mum gave me a bit of potato chip â my favourite food. She had saved it for me. It was a bit soggy but still very tasty. As a dessert I got a small piece of a sugar crystal. I was so happy. My mother looked at me lovingly and said that you can go across and share this piece of sugar with Bing-Lee. I was delighted and crossed the courtyard to go to the other side of the house. As you can imagine, there was a âspring in my stepâ! I had just realized that I had not told Bingo about the beautiful kites in the picture. And I also needed to know why and how he got lost. That would be another nice story! Right?!
Note: This is the first story that I wrote and it was completed in May 2013. The idea of the story germinated during a trip to Sikkim. The hilly terrain of the state (especially Kalimpong), with school kids in smart uniforms going to school in line on small hilly roads, small grocery shops on top of a hill and heavy rains, all contributed to the story.
Great content! Keep up the good work!
